Review: The Obsession by Nora Roberts

All right, let's do this!!

I was debating which book to review and decided to go with The Obsession by Nora Roberts... Her books are usually comfort reads, so I figured they'd be comfort reviews too? Or at least, easy to review... right? Guess I'll find out now LOL.

The Obsession by Nora Roberts
published by Putnam in April 2016
Naomi Bowes lost her innocence the night she followed her father into the woods. In freeing the girl trapped in the root cellar, Naomi revealed the horrible extent of her father’s crimes and made him infamous.

Now a successful photographer living under the name Naomi Carson, she has found a place that calls to her, thousands of miles away from everything she’s ever known. Naomi wants to embrace the solitude, but the residents of Sunrise Cove keep forcing her to open up—especially the determined Xander Keaton.

Naomi can feel her defenses failing, and knows that the connection her new life offers is something she’s always secretly craved. But as she’s learned time and again, her past is never more than a nightmare away.
Genre: Contemporary romance, Romatic Suspense
Series: Stand-alone

The Story: For once, the blurb is pretty accurate. On the eve of her 12th birthday, Naomi follows her father into the wood, hoping to find the location of her birthday gift. Instead, what she finds is a young woman - naked, bloody and tied up - in a forgotten root cellar. The discovery and ensuing rescue and revelation that Naomi's father is a serial killer forever changes and marks Naomi and her family - her younger brother Mason, her mother and her two uncles with whom they go to live with.

Eighteen years later, Naomi is a successful photographer who's been roaming the country since she finished college... that is until she ends up in Sunrise Cove, Washington State. In Sunrise Cove, Naomi falls in love with this grand, isolated and neglected house - 5 fireplaces, 10 bedrooms, 6.5 baths - and decides to settle. At least, for now.

With all the renovation and her own work, Naomi doesn't expect to form bonds with the town and its residents. She doesn't expect to suddenly own a dog or to start a romance with Xander Keaton - mechanic, lead singer in a band and avid reader. She starts to embrace this new life until a series of murders, eerily similar to her father's crimes, starts happening... Her past seems determine to catch up to Naomi... but can she outrun it and find happiness?

My Opinion: Over the years, I've noticed a pattern with Ms Roberts' stand-alone books... It seems she'll have a winner book, followed by a lull of 2-3 years before her next wowzer. That was supposed to be last year... and therefore, I was sorely disappointed with Ms Roberts' last book, The Liar, because it really didn't meet my expectations. Still, I pre-ordered The Obsession, really hoping it would be the end of the drought... and guess what? It was!!

Ms Roberts' last hit for me was The Witness and not surprisingly, there was a lot of similarities between The Witness and The Obsession, mainly in the structure of both stories. Both books start with the heroine's back stories at a younger age, setting up for the intrigue. Fast-forward many years and our heroines are all grown up and we see them settle in their new lives. A major part of the books is dedicated to the day-to-day details, their routines, and how the heroes worm in their lives :) Finally, there's the intrigue/mystery part of the books... And while I could discern the pattern Ms Roberts used, I still immensely enjoyed The Obsession :)

I was kind of in a reading lull when I picked up The Obsession and right away, Ms Roberts hooked me in. Perhaps it was the familiarity of her voice, but it's hard to deny there is something special about Ms Roberts' writing. Especially when you consider the fact that a huge part of the book is about Naomi's renovations, her work and day-to-day life and Ms Roberts is still able to make it interesting. It's her way of making us connect with the characters better, but it takes talent to pull it off because with any other authors, I'm sure many of us would find it too detailed and boring... but Ms Roberts just makes it work. So I think with The Obsession, Ms Roberts played to her strength. She aslo kept the cast of characters under control which was an issue for me in The Liar.

Speaking of characters, I really enjoyed the ones in The Obsession, particularly Naomi. What I liked most with Naomi is that we understood from the beginning where her issues were coming from, why she was the way she was. I mean, you don't find out your father is a serial killer and play a critical part in his arrest without carrying a lot of baggage for the rest of your life. As such, I didn't have any issue with Naomi's fight or flight reaction and her fear of commitment. As for Xander, he was a great hero :) As Ames told me, who doesn't love a hero who loves to read? :P But seriously, I liked him. He wasn't as charming as Brooks from The Witness or grumpy as Simon from The Search, but a mixed of both. There was also a sexy, manly vibe coming off from Xander... perhaps the whole lead singer thing. I liked how confident he was, but without being pushy and appreciate that he didn't go completely alpha on Naomi. He listened to her and that was very important. Their romance was very organic and it worked :) Aside from Naomi and Xander, I enjoyed Naomi's brother's character the most. There's just something about a character having a goal and achieving int :) All the other characters were entertaining as well.

As for the mystery, well it was expected. I read a review somewhere that said the mystery/intrigue was a bit jarring, like it didn't seem to fit the rest of the story because most of the book was quite mellow. I can see where that reviewer is coming from, but for The Obsession, something had to happen. It'd be hard to believe that someone could comes across two murders in their life and them not being connected. Or perhaps, it'd make this person really unlucky ^_^;  So in that sense, I think the mystery failed a little... as in, it was a bit too predictable. Finally, the only part that I didn't really like was the whole thing with the first victim in Sunshine Cove. How she had a crush on Xander and felt that Naomi was stealing him and the confrontation. Something bothered me and I think it's the whole behavior. First, did we really need to know/connect with the victim? Did it really have to impact Naomi and Xander's that much? And second, it's how the woman was painted... As a dissatisfied woman with a bad attitude. Meh.

My Grade: B+.  I really enjoyed everything about The Obsession, It hooked me in from the beginning to the end and was perfect for my mood. Definitively Ms Roberts' better books in a few years... Hopefully, the wait won't be too long till the next winner.

Hmmm....

Hmmmm, so I can't think of anything to blog about ^_^;; Actually, I have some blog ideas, but I want more time than I have right now to write about them. So, let see...

All right, thought up of something! Recently, I've started watching Chinese TV series again... I grew up watching tv series made in Hong  Kong. In the past few years, a lot of Hong Kong actors started taking parts in Mainland China tv series because the pay was better. That combined with the many dramas set in ancient times and the gorgeous costumes... and the decreasing quality of Hong Kong tv dramas made me do the switch to Mainland China tv series. I'll definitively write more about Chinese tv series in upcoming posts, because I find the industry to be very different than in North America... but for now, here is some eye-candies - my current favorite actors which will make me give a try to certain TV series :)

Ma Su - I've been a fan for Ma Su for years! Actually since 2004! Wow, can't believe it's been that long! She's a great actress in my opinion, but not that popular :( Although she did win a "Breakthrough" award at the end of 2015, so perhaps her luck is turning around. I like that she takes on different roles... and she does a lot of modeling, so I can still see a lot of her.

Yuan Hong - He's been in the business for a while, but his popularity has only exploded recently - to the joy of every women LOL. I mean, look at him! Do I need to say more? While his popularity has really increased, he still doesn't get a lot of lead roles... Even when his the male lead, the series will focus on the heroine or something. Sigh. Anyway, he has a few series in post-production, so we should see him in 2016 and 2017.

Jiang Xin - She's grown really beautiful!! When she first appeared, I thought something about her looked awkward. Perhaps it was the make-up or the costume... but can't say that anymore! I never really paid much attention to her before, but she's definitively on my radar now. She had like 3 series in 2015 and one currently airing right now and I gotta say, she is a great actress. Very versatile. So yeah, definitively going to try her series from now on.

Hu Ge - He's extremely popular and has been since 2005. However, I've only started paying attention to him last year with Nirvana in Fire (you know, the TV series I was obsessed with in September :P) I always thought he was simply an idol actor, but he proved me wrong. I was blown away with his acting in Nirvana in Fire! I may not like all his projects, but I'll definitively check them out :)

Liu Tao - Another actress that grows more beautiful each year. Apparently, she got married and disappeared from the industry for a few years... but ever since her return, the lady is working hard! I always liked her and again, some great series in the past year. I also really like her currently style. Very low-key which suits her, because she can't hide her beauty.

Nicky Wu - He used to be a favorite actor of mine... but lately, I don't know. It seems like he switched his attention to producing tv series. He still acts in them, but his acting hasn't really impressed me. Or perhaps I should say, his projects haven't drawn me in.

From left to right: Nick Wang, Jin Dong and Ma Ke

These three actors have caught my attention in 2015-2016. I'm not yet ready to proclaim I'm a fan of theirs, but close LOL. They all have quite a few projects coming up, so I guess I'll be able to make up my mind. Plus, eye candies. Who can say no?

Voila. That's all I have for now. It's past midnight, but I say it still counts since it took me forever to find the pictures!!

E-books Library Format

Ugh. After going out the past two days, I was looking forward to coming home straight from work and blog, update my spreadsheets, read... Of course, it didn't happen that way. Instead, there was a huge accident on the bridge and therefore, huge traffic jam. The good news is I wasn't stuck in traffic. Instead, my sister and I went shopping (she's looking for a bridal shower's gift. If anyone has a suggestion, feel free to share!). Came home empty-handed, sigh. Anyway, all to say that there's a reason why this post is so late today!

All right, e-books library! We often share pictures of our physical bookshelves, but what about the virtual ones? I was talking with Rowena yesterday about our e-books library and she sent me pictures of hers... so I thought it'd be a great topic :)

First, how do you name your files? This is the format I use:

Author - [Series 0#] - Title

I use it for all formats - epub, pdf, mobi, etc. For authors, I usually go up to two if it's a collaboration. Any more and it falls under "Anthology."

As for the library itself, I file the ebooks by formats. And that's it.

Here is how it looks:

Lately, my "epub" folder is getting quite big and so, I'm considering sub-filing the ebooks into "A authors", "B authors", etc. folders.

What about you? What does your ebooks library look like?

The reason why...

The real reason why I'm not blogging as much as I used to is not curling. Yes, curling takes a lot of my time... but I'm pretty sure I could manage reading, blogging and curling. No, the real reason why I don't blog as much as I used to is... Candy Crush. I've mentioned it in the past, but seriously, this is an addiction I can't seem to kick.

Candy Crush, Candy Crush Soda and Farm Heroes... I can spend mindless hours rotating these three games and play. I used to spend my free time at work writing posts... now, I play ^_^;

One of the reasons why I can't seem to stop is because I'm competitive. Look where I'm at!!

Yep, level 1711! At this point though, I'm not sure if I should be proud or sad... but I'm thinking the latter ^_^;

What about you? Any game addiction?

Between, if anyone has suggestions for a 12-steps program, feel free LOL

Birthday Book Haul!

Made it!! Phew! LOL.

I wasn't sure what to blog about today. After seeing Ames and Leslie's posts, I thought to write about the upcoming new releases I was looking forward to, but those usually end up being long post... and time is short! LOL. In the end, I'll just share my new precious :) It's cool to have a birthday on a Tuesday, because it means new books!!

So here is what I got :)

The Hidden Oracle by Rick Riordan - This book kicks off Mr Riordan's new spin-off series. In the last book of The Heroes of Olympus series, The Blood of Olympus, Apollo angered Zeus. As a punishment, Zeus took away Apollo's immortality and made him human. I really enjoy the world Mr Riordan has created and I'm happy there's more books in it :) I've actually pre-ordered The Hidden Oracle back in January LOL. It's apparently one of the most anticipated books in 2016 and as a result, I save 40%. Win-win!

The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson - I first discovered Ms Matson with her debut novel, Amy and Roger's Epic Detour, thanks to Ames. Ever since then, Ms Matson's been on my auto-buy authors list... and with a release schedule of 1 novel every 2 years, let just say I really look forward to her books! As usual, The Unexpected Everything has a cute cover and intriguing blurb :) Looking forward to reading it!

The Earl Takes All by Lorraine Heath - I pre-ordered from Book Depository and so, even though it came out last week, I had to wait for my copy which arrived today. Perfect timing if you ask me! I love Ms Heath's writing... but I have to admit I have some apprehension for this one because of the plot. Nevertheless, I'll probably be picking it up soon since the reviews have been so good :)

Shuffle, Repeat by Jen Klein - For some unknown reasons, I've really been in the mood for YA lately. The only issue with YA books is that they are expensive whether it's the print or e-book version. I had a list of three, four books that came out today and decided to spoil myself by buying one. Shuffle, Repeat had the most promise :) Let's hope I made the right decision!

Voila! Hopefully, they'll keep me busy for the next few days ;)

Curling season 2015-2016

The 2015-2016 curling season is officially over! Technically, my last thrown rock was two weeks ago...  but there was still curling on TV. Now, it's really the end till next September. Sigh.

It's really hard for me to believe that this was my fourth curling season. I feel like I've just started curling yesterday!! Then again, I can't imagine my life without curling now LOL. Yes, it's time-consuming... but the friendships I've made and the fun I've had make it worth it :)

Lots of highlights this season... so I'll try to name a few :)

 1) No injury this year! Woohoo! LOL. This was my first curling season where nothing happened... No concussion, no appendicitis, no shoulder injury. I did spend the whole month of November knocking on wood LOL.

2) My sister joined! After 2 years of being constantly asked when she was going to play/join by all the other members... she finally jumped in and started curling. It was nice for her, because she knew everyone from hanging out at the club so much. This past season, she only played on Friday... but I think she'll play two nights next season :)

3) Supper club. A lot of us have a tendency to buy fast food for supper before a game, simply because it's convenient. Especially when you don't go home because lack of time or it's just out of the way. This year, I happened to curl the same night as D and he likes to cook... and being Asian, he tends to cook wayyyy too much and start feeding everyone. So this year, a few of us band together and started having supper together on Monday and Thursday. We each took turns to cook... or in my case, beg my sister to cook LOL. One of us "crock-potted" it the whole year LOL. Seriously though, it's been a lot of fun and way tastier. I think next year, we'll have a few more joining us in our supper club :)

4) The Briers. The Briers is the Canadian Men's Curling Championship and this year, it took place in Ottawa which is only 2 hours away from me. Ever since curling has become an Olympic Game discipline, the level of curling has been rising everywhere and so in international competitions, Canada is no longer guaranteed to medal... Still, the Briers probably exhibit the best competitive level of curling every year... because many countries only have one great team that represents them... while in Canada, there are soooo many teams that could do it. To win the Briers is probably harder than to win the world championship! Anyway, since the Briers were so close, my sister, curling best friend Jen and I went to watch it live... and it was sooooo great! We made a little trip out of it, staying overnight and went to four draws (3+ hours each). On each draw, there's 4 games going on at the same time. We had great seats and it was just awesome to watch such high level curling live, to hear the players discuss and joke, and so on. Even got a picture with my favorite team, Team Gushue... I thought this year's Briers was great... The only thing that would have made it better is if Team Gushue had won it all instead of being runner-up. Sigh. In December 2017, the curling Olympics trial will take place in Ottawa and so, we're already making plans to go and watch :)

5. Speaking of favorite teams... Team Gushue had an amazing season and so, it was fun to root for them :) I also fell in love with the Japanese women team, Team Fujisawa. They won silver at the world championship and were just so much fun to watch :) Definitively will be rooting for them from now on.

6. I'm very happy with how I played this year. On my league teams, I play lead and I've become quite consistent at it. It's just great when you make your shots LOL. Our open ladder team did really well this year, going from section D to C! The beginning of the season was a bit frustrating... made me and Jen even consider changing team next year... But then, Jen switched position (from 2nd to 3rd) and we started winning more! As a result, we're sticking together next year :) On my mixed ladder team, there were ups and downs as well... but in the end, we're staying in the A section, so we ended on an up :P We'll also be sticking together next year. On TGIF nights, I play 3rd and even skipped a few games. I have to say, it's fun to play other positions... the last tournament of the year, I actually skipped the team and we had a blast.

7. Volunteer of the year! Yep, that was me this year! woohoo :)

Last but not least, the people at the club. Pretty much what the romance community in blogland brought to me, I found at my curling club. I'm so happy I joined this one. Every event is so much fun, so much laughing! I've been very blessed... first with the romance blogland and now, with curling :)

30 Day Blog Challenge

Pffff, pffff.

That's the sound of me blowing away the cobwebs on my blog ^_^; Obviously, my resolution to figure a balance between curling and blogging didn't work out as I wished. Although I have to say this year, curling was really all-consuming... but more on that later :)

The bright side is I've been reading, especially now that the curling season is over... and I've been debating for a few weeks whether to give the blog another go. I really dislike dropping off the side of the earth and then, making a comeback. Just how many comebacks can one make? This time around, I really considered calling it quits... but this blog and the community were such a huge part of my life once upon a time, that I'm not ready to turn my back completely yet. So let's try one more time!

So I was talking with Ames earlier this week and she wishes to blog more consistently as well. She's come up with a challenge for herself: 30 Day Blog Challenge. So I'm going to jump in with her. I think perhaps a way to have me blog more consistently, even throughout the curling season, is perhaps changing the direction of this blog. I've never been shy to blog about my life, but I always tried to keep it very book-related... but perhaps do half-half now? Anyway, I guess I'll figure it out! Especially if I'm to blog everyday now :)

So here we go for the next 30 days! Well technically, 31 days in May! And I'll up the ante and try to throw in a review and another book-related post a week :)
