Monthly Reads - September 2008

Okay, here we go again :) Another month, another story. I seriously don't know how I did... first, I haven't blogged much this month, but I'm not sure I read either... Or perhaps I did, but it was all at the beginning or at the end of the month. Work has cramped my reading life, ugh. Also, I've suffered a bad case of "What to read?" syndrome this month... Usually, I buy new books to get me out of it, but there was absolutely nothing coming out in mid-September... Of course, at the moment, there's like a waterfall of new releases... Hopefully, this month, I'll be back to my regular self :)

1) To Catch a Thief by Christina Skye: C-
2) Feint or Art by Hailey Lind: B-
3) The Horsemaster's Daughter by Susan Wiggs: B
4) Nightwalker by Jocelynn Drake: B-
5) Price of Desire by Jo Goodman: C
6) That's (Not Exactly) Amore by Tracey Bateman: B+
7) Seduction of a Proper Gentleman by Victoria Alexander: C
8) Jinx by Jennifer Estep: B-
9) Storm Front by Jim Butcher: B
10) Fool Moon by Jim Butcher: B-
11) Grave Perils by Jim Butcher: C+
12) Summer Knight by Jim Butcher: B+
13) Secret Desires of a Gentleman by Laura Lee Guhrke: A-
14) Mr. Cavendish, I presume? by Julia Quinn: B/B+

So there it is, my reads for September. Have to say, I'm slightly under average... but not by much. As usual, the end of the month made a huge difference in the numbers... Seriously, I think I'm going to start looking forward to the end of the month, not just because of the Harlequin (Mira, HQN and Luna) releases come into store early, but also because I actually read! LOL :)

As usual, my review numbers suck though. I'm definitively going to work hard on it this month!! and I think I'll also start a monthly post series about which books I'm looking forward for the month :) Just so it reminds me of the books I actually want to buy. I did an online order this week and seriously, I just couldn't remember which books I wanted to read!!

I'm still looking for a good way to keep track of my reads... I've forgone the whole book journal for almost 2 months now... I miss it :( Shelfari isn't bad... but you know when you enter the date for a book? It doesn't show up!! It just says: read x times. I tried starting a google doc/excel spreadsheet... and I ended up putting lots of details... but I don't know :(

  1. Hey, nice template!

I see you had a bit of a Jim Butcher glom this month :-) I've only read the first couple of books in this series, thought they were okay, but didn't love them enough to continue.

I haven't seen the Quinn book around yet, and I refuse to get the third LLG book until I actually read the second, which is sitting in my TBR pile.

You've done a lot better than I have this month, I haven't yet counted the books, but I'll be surprised if the total number of books makes it to double-digits.

  2. Hey we read the same number of books this month! I was thinking of reading the Christina Skye book, but you didn't like it, huh? Wow, and four by Jim Butcher. I haven't ever read him.

  3. Li - Hi Li!! Glad you like the template :) I was in need of a change LOL :)

Yeah, see, what happened with Jim Butcher is I bought the series when I was down... then, never read them... Then, my friend asked me for a book last summer when he went on a cruise and I lent him the first book... and he devoured the 6 others I had when I came back... So he's making me read them (although I gave him what I got)... Anyway, the first three were okay... but the 4th one is really good and I heard it only gets better!! So I think i'm going to continue :P

I say skip the 2nd one and jump straight to the third... it's really good!!!

are you going to do a post about your September reads? Come one, it'd be nice :)

Jill - Really? Cool!!! I noticed you have a great reading year so far Jill and you're exceeding your goal each month :) Good job!!!

The Christina Skye book was meh. I actually love the cat burglar theme and so I try to read all the books that come out with this plotline... I don't know, the Skye book just didn't reach me and I wasn't interested in what was happening. It wasn't very exciting either :(

Yep, the Dresden Files... There's what, 10 books out I think? It's pretty good... I love the main character's humor... I just wished there was a bit more romance, LOL :)

  4. I agree with your Jim Butcher ratings. I thought the first was the weakest, but Summer Knight was my favorite of the first four. I'm on the fifth now. I started after my husband was on 6 or 8 and he encouraged me through book 1 or I'd have questioned his sanity. Harry as a character gets stronger, in the first I thought he was a foolish wimp.

I have the Julia Quinn on it's way to me now.

  5. Lisa - Glad you agree with my ratings and I'm not the only one feeling that way :) Summer Knight was real good :) I skimmed through the next few books already (I just can't wait) and I like what I'm seeing... Harry really grows up and that's nice :)

    Enjoy the new Quinn :)

  6. LOL @ foolish wimp - completely agree! Okay, I may skip to the fourth book or so. I have to say I did enjoy the Harry Dresden short stories that I've read, so perhaps it's time to give it another go.

My monthly reads post will have to wait till I get back from holiday - if I remember what I've read during Sept! I've been really rubbish at keeping track of books read lately.

  7. Li - Yeah, Harry is kind of foolish wimp in the beginning, but he grows better :) I seriously like the direction Mr Butcher is taking :)

Just skip to the 4th... I'll try to review the first 3 soon, so that way, you won't feel like you're missing anything :P Also, if you don't understand something, just ask me :P I'll provide spoilers with pleasure :P

I totally know what you mean by keeping track.. it's seriously hard :(
